Protecting e-mail communication from theft or manipulation is one of the most important tasks of companies. External attacks or the passing on of sensitive information by your own employees – whether intentionally or accidentally – cause financial damage in the billions and lasting damage to your image.

Authorities must also protect themselves against attacks on communication systems. In public administration, information is therefore officially classified as classified information in various security levels and is subject to high security requirements. IT solutions processing data of this kind must have received approval from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for the corresponding confidentiality level.

Some e-mail users are obliged by law to encrypt certain information. These include lawyers, notaries, auditors and tax consultants (§°203 of the Criminal Code), but also the federal government, the federal states and local authorities (e-government law) as well as KRITIS companies – such as energy suppliers or the food industry (IT security law) and hospitals, doctors or pharmacists.
