C-ITS for the European Commission

The challenge for the European Commission

Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) encompass a network of technologies that enable seamless communication between vehicles, infrastructure, and other road users, improving traffic safety, efficiency, and mobility. To ensure effectiveness, C-ITS relies on standardization and centralized control. In the European Union, this responsibility falls to the Joint Research Centre, the European Commission’s science and knowledge service. C-ITS is expected to play a pivotal role in the future of transportation, with the European Commission and the Joint Research Centre at the forefront of its development and implementation.

A Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is essential for the functioning of any C-ITS system. The C-ITS PKI, managed by the Joint Research Centre, serves as the security foundation for all C-ITS operations across Europe.

Our solution for the European Commission

In 2020, the Joint Research Centre selected Eviden Digital Identity (then Atos) to deploy and manage its C-ITS PKI. The solution implemented for this purpose is the IDnomic C-ITS PKI. As a result, the IDnomic C-ITS PKI has become the central trust anchor for C-ITS users across Europe, including governments, public and private road authorities, and car manufacturers. These entities rely on it to authenticate their connected stations and secure their communications.

The C-ITS PKI solution provided by Eviden Digital Identity is hosted by Orange Business Services in France. It is the first C-ITS-compliant PKI to issue digital certificates for large-scale, real-world operations, moving beyond pilot projects to support everyday use.

ArianeGroup

Trusted identities for critical use cases

The challenge for ArianeGroup

The Ariane Group is a world leader in access to space, developing and manufacturing innovative launchers and providing civil and military space solutions. The company employs 7,000 people in France and Germany and has 11 subsidiaries and major partners.
As a typical aerospace industry requirement, ArianeGroup had a global requirement to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of data, whether accessed by physical or legal entities. In particular, this involved providing digital identities for employees, securing the workstations of maintenance teams, and tracking all interventions in an auditable process.

Our solution for ArianeGroup

We set up a cloud-based PKI system for the customer to manage credentials for all sensitive digital identities and ensure the integrity of information and actions. The scope includes the PKI for the production of digital identities, our CMS (Credential Management System) and all necessary enrollment protocol connectors, which are crucial for the provision of certificates via the network infrastructure

Cloud based PKI Solutions for Aeronautics

The challenge for Dassault Aviation

Dassault Aviation is an important reference in aviation. The company employs nearly 13,000 people (78% in France) and, over the course of a century, has developed about a hundred prototypes and more than 10,000 aircraft sold in 90 countries.
The company needed a PKI to share and protect its information system.

Our solution for Dassault Aviation

We have implemented our PKI in an “as-a-service” model in the cloud, providing electronic certificates from our data center, as well as our IDnomic CMS (Credential Management System) for smartcard-based strong authentication applications.

Highest security for complex systems

The challenge for Alstom

Alstom is a global leader in the transportation sector, manufacturing high-speed trains, metros, streetcars and e-buses. Its portfolio also includes digital mobility solutions.
Out of a desire to improve its internal systems and provide added value to its customers, Alstom decided to expand its IT applications. The company decided to deploy an internal PKI for authentication, authorization, and encryption of users, machines, and objects, and to implement cybersecurity to secure the firmware of train and railroad equipment.

Our solutions for Alstom

To meet all requirements, we have developed a complete solution for digital identity management and code signing. The solutions reflect the importance of protecting critical assets in complex systems built on a critical infrastructure with many smart objects.
Specifically, the solutions implemented were:
IDnomic PKI – centralized digital identity management system for all PKI use cases.
IDnomic Sign – platform for creating and verifying electronic signatures to ensure the integrity of device firmware
IDnomic Timestamping – application for providing trusted time tokens
